Troubleshooting Guide for Computer Doesn’t Recognize Ethernet Cable

There are many reasons why your computer may not recognize an Ethernet cable. You may need to check your settings, or simply replace the cable if it’s old and no longer working. Here are some ways you can troubleshoot.

Check Your Cable

First, you should check your cable. Make sure it’s plugged into the correct ports on your computer and that it’s in the correct position. If the cable is not working, replace it with a new one.

Check Your Connections

If you’re plugging an Ethernet cable into your modem or router, make sure the ports are the right way around.

1. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into a port on your computer.

2. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into a port on your modem or router.

3. Make sure both ends of the connection are inserted all the way in to ensure a tight fit and a good connection.

Update Your Software

If your computer doesn’t recognize the Ethernet cable, there may be a software installation issue. To fix this, update your software to the latest version.

Reinstall Your Drivers

When your computer doesn’t recognize an Ethernet cable, the first thing you should do is reinstall your drivers.

If you’re using Windows 10, just search “Device Manager” and then click “Network Adapters”. Right-click the device that is having trouble and click “Uninstall”. Once it’s done uninstalling, go to the manufacturer’s website and download the latest driver for your model.

For Windows 8 or earlier, open “Device Manager” and select Network Adaptor. Right-click the device and choose to uninstall it. Select “Scan for hardware changes” when prompted and allow Windows to detect and install any updated drivers automatically.

Plug in Your Cable Harder

You may simply need to plug in the cable harder. Consider whether your laptop is plugged in tight enough to the wall socket or if it’s in a position where the cable is loose.

Replace The Cable

One of the most common reasons a computer won’t recognize an Ethernet cable is because the cable is no longer working. It could be frayed or damaged in some way. Just take it to your local electronics store and get a new one!
